About the department-

Strengths of Department:

  • The Dept. of psychiatry started at Sir J J hospital in the year 1941, with Dr. K.R Masani as the first head of the department. Initially the department was started as a Psychoanalytical Institute with a single house physician, Dr. J.C. Martaftia to assist the  then head  Dr. K.R Masani. In the year 1944, a post gradute prgramme was started. Later undergraduate training was introduced as a part of Educational programme. Today, the Integrated Educational Programme consists of not only undergraduate and post graduate medical training , but also education and training of B.Sc , Nursing students training of Nursing personnel for Diploma Examination, Training of Medical and Psychiatric social worker medical

Services Provided:

  • Immunization against Rabies

  • Drop in center: Care, support, Counselling, Training, Advocacy, Empowerment of PLHAs

  • Active involvement in Epidemic control measures.

  • Disaster management

  • Rural Health & Training center, Palghar: Pioneer RHTC, established in year 1956. It is located around 120 Kms. from Mumbai on Western Railway. Primary & secondary health care services for community & training for interns, nursing students from various institutes in Mumbai. It has a 16 bedded Maternity hospital and 4 functional sub-centers.

  • Urban health Center, Bandra: Preventive & Curative Health services for community & under graduate teaching. It has a 50 bedded hospital and lecturers in various clinical faculties.

  • Under-graduate & Post-graduate teaching in the subject of Preventive & Social Medicine at Grant Medical College, Mumbai.

  • Teaching for the II year students of GNM & B.Sc. Nursing courses involving community Medicine.

  • Functioning of Institutional Ethical Committee (IEC), which reviews the research protocols of the studies involving humans conducted at Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Group of hospitals and its associated hospitals (St. George Hospital, Cama & Albless hospital and G.T. Hospital).

Equipments available:

Majority of the equipments which are required for the teaching and research are available with the department. Functioning and necessary equipment required for running a basic public health laboratory is available.

  • Workshop on “Research Methodology” for teaching faculty and postgraduate students organized in 2005.

  • Workshop on “Immunization Strengthening” for teaching faculty and post graduate students organized in 2004.

  • Active contribution of faculty & Post graduate students for the WHO NPSP in Monitoring the Pulse Polio Programme & evaluation of the Programme.

  • Training of interns, Class IV workers, Nurses, Post graduate Students in the field of HIV/AIDS by conducting workshop.
