Strengths
of Department:
The
Pathology department was established in 1880 and the first
autopsy was conducted in 1882. In 1896, V.N. Haffkine
worked on Polio in the Petit laboratory of Grant Medical
College, Mumbai. This laid down the foundation of
development of Haffkine institute. Robert Koch worked on
vibrio cholera in 1902 & his workplace is located in
old animal house near postmortem room. Van Dyke Carter in
1907 discovered in the pathology department. spirochetes
of relapsing fever in blood smear. The Christopher and
Caval also worked on Malaria and Raghvendra Rao worked on
trophical diseases, leprosy, plaque and leishmaniasis. In
1924, Professor V.R.Khanolkar occupied the chair of
Pathology department where he excelled as a teacher.
Dr.V.R.Khanolkar was a leading biomedical visionary. His
leadership put caner research in India on world map. In
1929, the Pathology department shifted to the new building
of Pathology school.
Dr.P.V.Gharpure
developed very extensive pathology museum in which more
than 3000 common & uncommon specimen are
mounted.
Dr.R.K.Gadgil,
former Professor and Head of the department of Pathology
made outstanding contributions to Helminthology in India.
He has been one of the first not only to discover, in
India, an endemic focus of human schistosomasis, (schistosoma
haematobium) but has also been successful in establishing
its life cycle. Dr. Gadgil has again being responsible for
finding the centre of infection for fasciola buski around
Bombay. The post mortem investigations into diethylene
glycol (adulterated glycerol) poisoning causing renal
cortical necrosis was carried by Dr.U.L.Wagholikar, former
Professor and Head of this department. His work on
pathology of Renal cortical necrosis was highly
appreciated and was presented at international
conference.The Pathology Department is the only department
in India which have carried out extensive work on Autopsy
Pathology of AIDS
Dr.D.N.Lanjewar
& his team have studied more than 240 autopsies on
adults dying due to AIDS. This work on Pathology of AIDS
is published in National as well as International Journals
& is well recognised. Since 1989, National Autopsy
workshops are regularly conducted at the department of
Pathology
The
Neuropathology Unit : In 1949, that visionary in medical
research Dr.V.R.Khanolkar, then Director of Laboratories
of Tata Memorial Hospital, started the Neuropathology
Unit, with financial support from Indian council of
Medical Research (ICMR). The three objectives of the unit
were (1) diagnostic service (2) Neurologic research and
(3) training of young medical and science graduate in this
field. In 1962, the Unit moved to the post Graduate
Research Laboratory building of Grant Medical College and
Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals. The government of
Maharashtra Commenced the take over of the unit in 1964
with the appointment of Dr.D.K.Dastur in a professor grade
in the recognition of the work already accomplished as an
Research officer at Neuropathology Unit. Till 1974, 130
papers were published by Dr.D.K.Dastur in collaboration
with clinicians of J. J. Hospital and KEM Hospital, Mumbai.
The unit has contributed in Research of Leprosy,
Tuberculosis, Wilson's disease, manganism, malnutrition
and muscle pathology.
