Strengths
of Department:
The Department of
Orthopaedics of this hospital is one of the oldest amongst
the teaching institutes in Bombay (Mumbai).It boasts of
stalwarts like Dr.Masalawalla who was the former Head of
the Department & a pioneer in the treatment of Potts
Spine.Dr.B.B.Joshi who designed an external fixator named
after him and revolutionised the techniques of hand injury
management, is also an aluminus of this great
institute.Many of the remaining ex-post graduates are
working in India & abroad in positions of excellence.
The strengths of the department can be judged with
the fact that it caters to the needs of a majority of the
middle class & poverty-stricken population of
Mumbai.It also acts as a major referral center for
patients all over India.The Out-Patient Department
witnesses approximately 300-350 patients daily between
8.30 am & 12.30 pm.It is open all 6 days of the weeks
with the initial four days dealing with new patients with
Fridays & Saturdays dedicated to the Follow-Up
Patients..The Indoor Wards have a capacity of 120 patients
at any given time.
The Department has an excellent faculty who are
experienced in all the major branches of orthopaedic
surgery and are currently working in 4 teaching units, two
being in the J.J.Hospital & the remaining in the
peripheral institutes of G.T. Hospital and St.George
Hospital respectively .The details of the teaching staff

There is an active teaching programme for the
post-graduate students which involves weekly seminars
& case presentations.The under-graduates are taught
the nuances of clinical history taking & examination
along with the required basic management.
The Department provides emergency services in the
casualty which is manned by an orthopaedic resident round
the clock. The departmental members were apt in providing
emergency medical treatment to the Bomb-Blast Victims in
Aug.2003 & the Building Collapse Patients in
Aug.2005.All specialities of operations are done here with
Spine & Joint Replacement surgeries being the
prevalent ones along with the fixation of routine
fractures & trauma.The theatre has the state of art
facilities with 4 C-Arms, A.O.instrumentation & an
operating microscope.
The
Master of Surgery Degree courses (M.S.) of the University
of Mumbai are offered in this department. Currently, the
annual intake of post-graduate students is Five. The
faculty is always involved in academic activities of paper
presentations & publications. The department has to
its credit a number of National and International
publications.
