Strengths of Department:

The Department of Dentistry had its inception in the early nineteenth century  (1928)as one of the oldest Dental College in Asia “The C.ME. Dental college. In 1962 the Government Dental College moved to its present site at the St. George Hospital campus . Since then this Department is working Effeciently to provide good oral and dental care for the patients in the main O.P.D building as part of the Grant Medical College and  Sir J.J.Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. 

LOCATION

The department of Dentistry is situated on the first floor of the main O.P.D building in room No 23.

 SERVICES

The department has three fully electrically operated dental chairs of international standards, an X-ray unit and Prosthetic laboratory

At present the department is providing:

1.      OPD Services

2. Special Clinics which  provide services in different specialties of Dentistry :  Oral Diagnosis & Radiology, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Pedodontics,  Conservative  Dentistry  and Endodontics along with Preventive Dentistry.

ORAL  MEDICINE , DIAGNOSIS & RADIOLOGY

Every patient visiting the Dental O.P.D. is first examined, a probable diagnosis made and the patient is advised any investigations required and further prescribed medicines.

The Dental department has its own X-Ray unit. The Intra Oral Periapical X-ray is routinely  shot and the findings interpreted by the Dental Doctors.

ORAL SURGERY

Oral  surgical procedures like Exodontia (extraction of teeth) is done routinely . Biopsies of Precancerous Lesions and Conditions is also taken. We have provision of on call services to all departments and handling of emergency cases. Management of white lesions and Odontogenic space infections

PERIODONTICS

Problems related to the surrounding tissues of the dentition including bleeding gums, halitosis, sensitivity to hot and cold, mobile teeth, gingival hyperplasia is taken care of. Ultrasonic scalers are used to do oral prophylaxis , deep scaling of  supragingival and subgingival  areas.

PROSTHODONTICS

Missing teeth replacements of partially edentulous and completely edentulous patients.  Repairs of dentures   and denture adjustments.

Maxillofacial rehabilitation: fabrication of maxillofacial prosthesis after tumour ablation i.e. Obturators in special cases.

PEDODONTICS

Oral health services for the pediatric patients visiting the department of dentistry - restorations, periodontal therapy, preventive procedures, endodontics and oral surgical procedures.

CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY

Filling of carious teeth using silver amalgam alloy, Glass Innomer cement. Light cure composite filling for anterior teeth to maintain the aesthetic of patient and to keep the patient smiling with beautiful dentition.

ENDODONTICS

Handling of Endodontic emergencies, root canal treatment for anterior and posterior teeth.

PREVENTIVE ORAL HEALTH SERVICES

Provision of chairside preventive strategies for low, moderate and high-risk patients. Counselling for diet and sugars, oral hygiene instructions, awareness on appropriate use of topical fluorides and flossing.

PATIENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Dental treatment of  patients with AIDS using a special disposable kit. Children from the Remand homes , Patients from the Prison are also provided dental treatment .  Treatment is also provided to the   elderly residing in the old age homes of Mumbai.

Treatment and follow up checkups to prisoners within the prison itself.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Organizing Dental Camps targeting the lower socio-economic groups in Mumbai.  Oral and Maxillofacial examination along with oral health education programmes.

TEACHING

Lectures and clinics for MBBS students on basics of Oral Health, relevance of oral health in systemic health, diagnosis and referral of cases of oral and maxillofacial injuries and importance of interdisciplinary management.

PROSTHETIC LABORATORY

The Dental Laboratory technician Mr.Satish Nagvekar at work. He was recently awarded as the best worker from the J.J. Group of Hospitals,Mumbai and the Rotract club of Mumbai.
